Ornate
Watercolor, Prismacolor, December 2014
7”x10”
This piece, depicting the choker necklace, long necklace, and pallu (diagonal torso garment) of a Bharatanatyam costume. The ornate design of fancy Indian outfits is an astounding display of handiwork and creativity. Almost wholly pure gold is used in both the necklaces and the embroidery in the silk, making it a bright, gleaming yellow. The blue and green of the sari represent the beautiful peacock-inspired color palette, an icon of India. Red and yellow are the most symbolic colors in Indian culture, and their startling contrast against brown skin and the blue outfit represent prosperity, happiness, and festivity.
