Looking Forward

Looking Forward
Charcoal, Graphite, September 2014

Celebrating beautiful, thick hair, this portrait defines both the appearance and character of a close friend. Her hair, wavy and voluminous frames her face and brings out her big eyes, long eyelashes, and uneven, thick eyebrows. Not only do her unshaped brows mark the natural state of most Indian eyebrows, they also highlight her eyes. The slight bags under her eyes show stress and nights of little sleep, but her gaze, looking forward, shows strength and resilience. This tribute to her personality and status as an Indian, primarily through her hair and facial features, represents the grace and attitude stemming from her culture.
